De Bruyne: Jose spoke to me twice at Chelsea

Manchester City’s £54m man Kevin de Bruyne claims Jose Mourinho only spoke to him twice during the time they worked together at Chelsea. The Belgian signed for Chelsea from Genk as a 20-year-old in January 2012 but failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, playing only three Premier League games for the Blues. I didn’t do it in Wolfsburg and I didn’t do it at my other teams. I’m not the most open player, I’m not the biggest clown. Mario Balotelli to be assessed after suffering gashed foot against Hull

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has suffered a gashed foot and will be assessed over the next few days, manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.

The Italy striker cut a frustrated figure yet again during the Reds 1-0 defeat at Hull City, which left them seven points short of the top-four with four games. left.

And Rodgers said: “The opportunity to get into the Champions League was always going to be difficult.

“We lost key players and introduced a lot of new players. We have to work with what we’ve got. They’re a good honest bunch, who work hard every day, and they’ve got to get over the disappointment now.

“We’ve got to focus on the next game. We need to finish this season strongly and regroup again before the end of pre-season.”

Wayne Rooney: Man Utd striker set for midfield job against Chelsea

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says he may play striker Wayne Rooney in midfield at Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League as Michael Carrick and Daley Blind are injured.

Rooney featured in midfield earlier in the season.

"Blind and Carrick could play in the holding midfield position," said Van Gaal.

"I don't have another option or I have to play Wayne Rooney again in that position so I have to puzzle a lot."

Blind has not recovered from an ankle injury he suffered in the win over Manchester City last Sunday, while Carrick has not overcome the calf problem he sustained in the same game.

Defenders Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans are also sidelined, although Van Gaal has replacements in Paddy McNair or Tyler Blackett to play alongside Chris Smalling.

"It's the worst scenario," said Van Gaal. "But other players can take profit."

However, unless Van Gaal finds a solution to his midfield problems Rooney may have to fill in and that could mean a recall for striker Robin van Persie, who has been out for nearly two months with an ankle injury.

"This is the first week he's [Van Persie] trained with the first team, but maybe we have to think about him," added Van Gaal.

Title fight 'not logical'

United are eight points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who have played a game less, and Van Gaal does not believe it is realistic that his side can challenge for the title.

"It is possible, but it is not logical," Van Gaal, whose team have six league games remaining.

"I believe in facts and the fact is we are behind Chelsea.

"All right we have to play against them, so does Arsenal so we can lay pressure on Chelsea's shoulders [on Saturday], that's true and then you never know.

"You have seen that also in previous Premier League seasons so it is always possible, but it is not logical."

Leeds Rhinos outclass St Helens to move six points clear at top of Super League table

A hat-trick of tries from teenage winger Ash Handley helped Leeds to a handsome 41-16 win over reigning champions St Helens that takes them six points clear at the top of Super League.

The 19-year-old Handley got his big chance due to an injury to England winger Tom Briscoe and how he has seized it, with six tries in just six Super League appearances.

The Rhinos simply oozed confidence on the back of their five-match winning run while Saints looked fragile as the one-time leaders crashed to a fourth defeat in their last five matches.

Leeds have now played every other team in Super League and, with just one defeat in their opening 11 matches, will take some stopping as they eye a first league-leaders' title for six years.

Handley's first try came against the run of play as he plucked a Josh Jones pass intended for debutant winger Matty Fleming out of the air and sprinted 90 metres to the other end of the pitch.

Handling errors by Mark Flanagan and Adam Swift ensured Saints remained on the back foot and they fell further behind on 15 minutes when hugely-impressive prop Adam Cuthbertson kept the ball alive on the last tackle and centre Joel Moon produced a delightful one-handed pass out of the back of his hands to get Handley over again.

Stand-off Liam Sutclife, preferred to skipper Kevin Sinfield in Leeds' starting team, justified his selection with a superb break to create a try for full-back Zak Hardaker and his third conversion made it 18-0 in as many minutes.

It got even better for the visitors when makeshift centre Carl Ablett split open the Saints defence to get veteran half-back Danny McGuire sprinting over from halfway for a fourth try and this time Sinfield, starting as a substitute for the first time for nearly 12 years, added the goal.

Inspired by the never-say-die efforts of England hooker James Roby, St Helens produced their best spell of the match and pulled a try back in fortuitous circumstances when full-back Tom Makinson touched down Jon Wilkin's kick when it looked like a knock-on. Travis Burns added the goal.

That score suddenly brought the game to life but the Rhinos struck a devastating blow to the champions deep into first-half stoppage time when a break out of defence by Kallum Watkins created the position for Sutcliffe to gift-wrap a third try for Handley courtesy of a pin-point kick to the corner.

Trevor Sinclair: Manchester City should sell Yaya Toure this summer

Trevor Sinclair believes Manchester City should sell Yaya Toure this summer and bring in some new players.

The former City winger believes Toure, who has been linked with a switch to Inter Milan, has been a shadow of the player that helped the club win the title last season.

Toure was criticised for ducking his head while in the wall when Jason Puncheon scored a free-kick in Monday's night’s 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Sinclair believes Toure has not been the same player since his agent criticised the club last year for not celebrating the player's birthday.

He told The Morning View: “He’s been a fantastic servant. Just from last year, after his birthday, his agent and came out and said he was disappointed. I don’t think he’s committed to the club anymore.

UEFA concerned over behaviour of players and 'triple punishment' rule

UEFA has revealed it is considering measures to improve the behaviour of players on the pitch.

Chelsea were criticised for the way they reacted to a tackle on Oscar by Zlatan Ibrahimovic that saw the Paris Saint-Germain striker sent off as they knocked Jose Mourinho’s side out of the Champions League on Wednesday.

The sides drew 2-2 after extra-time at Stamford Bridge following a 1-1 draw in the French capital in the first leg as Laurent Blanc’s team advanced on the away goals rule.

Chelsea skipper John Terry has since spoken out to defend his team-mates but UEFA's head of media Pedro Pinto admits there are concerns within the organisation over players putting pressure on officials during games.

"The president (Michel Platini) has recently been more concerned about the behaviour of players on the pitch and it is something we are looking at at the moment to see what can be done," said Pinto.

"Obviously, we would like to see an environment where players accept the decisions taken and where they would not employ the tactic of pressure and intimidation of the officials during the game.

"Right now, there is a strong interest internally to look at specific initiatives and campaigns, and possibly regulations that would be a positive influence on football and would hopefully have an impact on the behaviour of players.

"We are aware there is concern regarding the behaviour overall... it is not a good example for fans, for future players or for the image of the game."

'Triple punishment'

UEFA has also voiced concerns about the so-called ‘triple punishment’ rule, whereby a player concedes a penalty, is sent off for denying a clear scoring chance and serves an automatic suspension.

Shakhtar Donetsk player Oleksandr Kucher was sent off in the third minute of his side’s 7-0 drubbing away to Bayern Munich for a foul on Mario Goetze which led to a penalty, converted by Thomas Muller.

Pinto and UEFA believe the triple punishment rule places undue pressure on match officials and have campaigned to amend them.

UEFA's suggestion that red cards should be replaced with a yellow in such cases was turned down in February by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which has instead suggested removing the automatic suspension aspect of the rule.

"We feel that the current triple punishment rule as it stands puts the referee in a very tough position and leads to decisions which are made that end up having quite a strong influence on the games," added Pinto.

"We feel it is too harsh and kills too many games. Even though the IFAB is looking at to amend a rule for suspensions, that does nothing to change what happens on the field.

"We are trying to make football the best spectacle possible for the fans and the teams on the pitch and, unless it is obviously a 99 per cent scoring position, we feel the rule as it stands is too harsh."
